Four Thirds cameras compared to DSLR
The Four Thirds camera system is a brand new, standardized lens mount system that goes with digital SLR (single-lens-reflex) cameras. Four Thirds offers a camera lens that is designed specifically for high quality, digital photography, unlike current lenses which were created and designed on the requirements of film.
They use a 4/3-type image sensor, which allows the four thirds system to achieve the high image quality that users of digital SLR cameras continue to expect. However, when compared to other technology, this system maintains the compact size required to support better mobility. It will also help create and promote a wider selection of lens and interchangeability.
The advantages of this new four thirds system compared to others is :
- As indicated, the Four Thirds system lenses were created for digital photo taking, not like other SLRs that use lens designed around film requirements.
- The Four Thirds system lenses greatly enhance and improve image quality by maximizing the perpendicular image projection to the image sensor, which will minimize "oblique" or angular image projection.
- The 4/3-type camera lens and image sensor has half the focal requirements of 35 mm lens. What this means is that users can have a 600 mm lens that uses the same physical size of a 35 mm, 300 mm lens.
- It is an open standard. So anyone can develop for it. This will promote great interchangeability, compatibility, as well as the ability to use a wide variety of lens from several different DSLR camera manufacturers.
