Canon Inc. holds the lead with 43% of the DSLR market, but Nikon has made some gain on that lead, and this year gained 7% from 2005 for a total of 40%.

Canon sold about 3.2 million DSLRs in ‘07. Compare that to Nikon’s 3 million. That is not much of a lead by Canon. This represents a 42.7 percent and 40 percent share of the 2007 Digital SLR market. It is a very narrow margin for Canon, not as great as the ‘06 lead, when Canon SLR  had 46.7 percent of the market, compared with Nikon’s 33 percent. Sony’s market share was at 6%, with Olympus just under 6%.

Even better news for all the DSLR fans in general. DSLR sales are growing significantly faster than compacts, primarily because when compared to a digital camera, DSLR’s are becoming more and more affordable, and the best models are extraordinary
